We want to recognize the Indigenous people who lived in Canada long before Canada was called Canada. Their Nations, culture, beliefs and stories are still alive and strong today. Surrey and White Rock are on the shared, unceded, traditional territory of the Katzie, Semiahmoo and Kwantlen Nations.
In most of the land in which we live, work and play the language of Halkomelem is spoken. The image below, from the website Original Voices, shows the range and number of speakers of the language. This website helps teach about the languages spoken across Canada.
Whose Land is a website that can be used to help understand whose land we live on today and can be broken down by city, treaty, Indigenous Community, or by land. Canada is the traditional home of the First Nation, Inuit and Metis people. All information above comes from the Whose Land website. Below is a map showing the range of the different territories in Canada. This site is meant to be a talking point towards reconciliation.
