LIbrary Policies
Research around the world shows that building an interest in reading for pleasure helps students to increase their literacy and help students’ academic achievement in all areas of school. “Reading introduces new perspectives and ideas to young people, which helps them make connections across the curriculum” (Wilson 2020). Studies show that students with free choice over their reading materials build a greater love of reading. Because of this, I do not guide students to specific reading levels or types of books. Students may choose any books they would like. If a book is too difficult, it would make a great read aloud by an older member of their household. Students are taught how to choose books 'right for them' to help them choose books they can read independently.
(The only section that is restricted is the Young Adult section which is open to grade 6 and 7 students, unless a parent permission form has been completed).
